A sanitary sewer overflow has occurred along the Oconto River between ST Paper and the Waste Water Treatment Plant in the City of Oconto Falls.
The overflow along the Oconto River occurred from approximately 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 until 2:00 p.m. on July 24th. Total estimated volume spilled is 1,000 - 2,000 gallons.
The overflow resulted from a sewer main siphon breaking that crosses the river, causing raw sewage to seep out of the ground and onto the soil surface. The soil surface is sloped in the general direction of the Oconto River, causing the flow to head in the direction of the river. It is possible that some of the raw sewage reached the Oconto River via the surface runoff.
Oconto Falls Water & Light responded to the incident and stopped the overflow. The flow to the north siphon was shut off and all flow is currently being diverted to the south siphon. Oconto Falls Water & Light is taking all necessary steps to limit any public health hazard or potentially harmful effects on the environment.
